Tip of the Month:
Get the most from your ChartCase Professional software.

Tech Support received a few calls over the past month from users that hadn't opened the "In-flight" mode of their Moving Map software. (If this had been just a single caller we wouldn't have made this a Quick Tip!)

So, if you are using ChartCase Professional and haven't used the [View] [Start Inflight] menu option before, give it a try. You can find all the details in the [Help] [User Manual] starting on page 152.

* FlightPrep Awarded U.S. Patent #7640098 for Online Flight Planner

Stenbock & Everson, Inc. received our patent in a formal presentation process January 15th. The U.S. Patent Office issued the patent for an application originally submitted in July 2001 for the creation of a new methodology of online flight planning processes.

FlightPrep’s Online Planner is recognized for the ability to display charts and routes interactively from data stored on an Internet server. The invention cites the ability for the user to interactively modify routes without requiring the download of the entire chart after each change.

The patent also covers the ability to receive flight plans from an Internet server as well as the ability to file flight plans generated by an Internet server with a travel regulating agency.

Inventors Roger Stenbock commented "We enjoyed the design process to create this new technology" and Kyle Everson said "We look forward to receiving additional patents in the future."

Another photo and the patent pages are presented on the Press Releases page of the FlightPrep web site.

* Aviation Consumer (R) conducts flight planner "Software Shootout" in January 2010 issue!

We are proud to report that the review cuts straight to the chase;
"FlightPrep Golden Eagle Plus wins our prize for hitting all the important items without any frills."
Furthermore the review goes on to identify several features we deliver to our customers;

  • "Simple & intuitive, well-integrated charts and approach plates."

  • "Departure procedures appear with approaches, something overlooked by many planners."

  • "METARs are displayed on the map with color coding for a quick view of what's going on"

  • "Pop-up details are on a single line of text."

  • "Golden Eagle Plus is the easiest to navigate, with options clearly shown across the top bar"

To set the record straight, another competitor in this review asserts that they were selected as the "#1 Aviation Consumer Awards Paid-for Voyager Most Powerful Flight planner." We found that a little difficult to believe, since this is the same competitor which Aviation Consumer critiqued as "the most non-traditional in design - and that's why we could alternately put it at the top or the bottom of our rankings." Additional comments attributed to this competitor include;

  • "this capability comes at a cost aside from dollars" and "will take out a lesser computer at the knees.."

  • "also had some issues under Vista. They were worked out but it was the most persnickety of all the software packages we tried."

  • "finding it difficult to get to the information we wanted with overlapping map information, such as an airport under the airspace of a larger airport or figuring out how to get the airport we wanted ..."

  • Aviation Consumer's bottom line? "The takeaway is that if you don't want to spend some time learning the program and customizing it to your needs, this probably isn't the package for you."

Does that sound like the "winner" to you? No, I didn't think so either!

We invite you to read the article for yourself. Then call us to get the "simple and intuitive" way to flight plan, the Golden Eagle Plus way!

* New FlightPrep software printed manuals available
We printed a limited run of spiral-bound manuals for those who like a "book" as a supplemental reference while running their FlightPrep software. While the content of the manual is exactly the same as the [Help] [User Manual] feature in the software, it is kind of handy to be able to jot notes in the margin of a printed page. Give Audrie a call to order your paper manual copy before we run out of this first printing!

ChartCase Version 5 Adds Traffic Display

ChartCase Professional now has Live Traffic capability!
See what you've been missing! Get traffic information on your FlightPrep EFB (Electronic Flight Bag) system straight from your XRX and without the need for TIS coverage. Zaon and FlightPrep have teamed up to provide highly-accurate traffic information overlaid on the same screen you are already using.

Hooking up an ZAON XRX to your EFB is simple and easy. Available in wired or wireless Bluetooth configurations, the XRX provides traffic information that the FlightPrep can read and display on the moving map and status display. ChartCase graphically shows the three nearest threats. The clear, concise display helps you focus your search on where to look to See and Avoid other aircraft.

Plain Language Router makes it easy to directly enter your desired routings. If you know exactly what path you want to file, use the [Route] Plain Language Router menu option in Golden Eagle Plus, ChartKey and ChartCase Professional. Are you short on oxygen or not equipped? Simply enter "KUAO *v-9000 KSAC" and the system will build a valid airways route from Aurora to Sacramento Executive with a maximum MEA of 9000' Also routes over Jet routes and GPS Direct. Try it in new Golden Eagle Plus, ChartKey & ChartCase Professional Version 5 software!

Much Faster Startup in Golden Eagle, Golden Eagle Plus, ChartKey & ChartCase Professional new Version 5 too. The new program now takes advantage of your computer's processing power to load charts, data, plates, TFRs, weather and winds aloft while you start building your route. As a result, you get to the main planning screen seven times faster than before.

You will be more productive with faster Version 5 software and its new features. Get ChartCase Professional and start receiving the benefits now!

* Share your Aircraft Model
Have you created a custom aircraft model for the aircraft you operate? We are collecting aircraft that users would like to share with others. If you built an aircraft model from scratch or modified an existing model that shipped with your software, we'd like to share it with other users in a future release. You can email your model to support@flightprep.com. You'll find your aircraft in the "My Documents\FlightPrep\Aircraft" folder.  Just attach it to an email.  We'll review it and complete aircraft models will become part of an expanded library in a future release. Note: we will change the number when your email arrives so don't worry about someone else planning a flight with your N-number!

Faster Downloads for everyone!
We moved our download servers closer to you, wherever you are today! Taking advantage of so-called "cloud computing" technology, you now get your Internet downloads of FlightPrep data delivered locally. This change leads to faster and more error-free downloads of program and database updates as well as your charts and plates. Thanks for Flying with FlightPrep!

ChartBook is now available with Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 7 operating system. We have been flying ChartBook under Windows 7 beginning July and it runs great. Intel bundled software permits easier screen brightness controls and rotation. Get Windows 7 now as OEM or an upgrade.

ChartBook is the result of many months of work building the best ready-to-use system available. FlightPrep sourced a touch screen tablet system with a convertible, rotating display. We created the exclusive Flight Definition display, available only on ChartBook! We installed Solid State Disk (SSD) to eliminate any altitude or mechanical reliability concerns. We integrated a portable remote GPS to provide position information for the moving map display. All these features and still under $2000? Say Hello to ChartBook! See our advertisements in AOPA Pilot and Plane & Pilot magazine. Review the features and get more with ChartBook.

"My evaluation unit had an upgraded screen with increased brightness (a $200 option). It was easily the brightest and clearest display I have seen on any battery-powered EFB- it worked well even in direct sunlight (at full brightness, I could use it with sunglasses). I highly recommend it to anyone considering ChartBook." John Ruley, Plane & Pilot, Dec 2009
